Stop Wasting Your Time On People You Don’t Connect With

I was having a conversation with my sister-in-law this weekend about connecting with people. I was explaining to her that there are some people, no matter how hard I try, I just cannot connect with. She asked me, “Well, what does a connection feel like?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “Something just clicks.”

“But what is it?” she asked.

So, I’ve been thinking about that: what is a connection, really? Is it easy conversation? Is it admiring someone’s character? Is it having something in common?

What is a connection? What makes you become friends with someone?

Here’s the thing, and it may not seem related, but it is: I never knew I would know so many dead people by 35. It’s taught me one thing…time is so valuable.

The older I get, the less I have time for people I don’t connect with (whatever that even means). When I first met Todd, he had a group of friends, his “single crew.” When I came in the picture, I became friendly with most of them, and I ended up spending a lot of time with people I never connected with. Sure, I had fun with them, but other than that, there was no depth to conversations or understanding of who Dileiny really is.

Is that what a connection means? An understanding of a person?

My friends and family will say I am the best party-thrower, and for some reason my events do always turn out great. As much I want to pat myself on the back and call myself some fabulous party-thrower, it’s the people in my life that make my parties great. Somehow, I have managed to connect with some of the best people, and when I put them all in a room together, voila.

You do your life such a disservice when you waste your time on people you do not connect with. Be the energy that makes people feel good– and you will attract the same. The universe isn’t that complicated; us humans just like to think it is.

Hope you guys are having an amazing week, and as always, thank you for reading.
